The Carbon Neutral NZ Trust has commissioned a report on the feasibility of transforming wastewater treatment in the Far North. It is crucial to keep our waterbodies clean to maintain their ability to sequester CO₂, known in Te Ao Māori as 'the mauri'.

Currently, our wastewater treatment plants discharge into various water bodies in a more or less diluted form.

Many of these treatment plants are non-compliant. Our Māori researcher demonstrates how this can be transformed into more efficient and affordable methods.

Check out the report, which is written in non-scientific language and aimed at hapū/iwi, council members and staff, and journalists.

We provide recommendations on what actions to take and when (see page 50). Two pilot projects are nearly ready to be launched in Rawene and Taipa, with active support and full understanding from hapu, making them suitable for smaller communities and remote control.
