The Zero-Carbon Fortress

The Far North is often described as the "end of the line". But when it comes to the green energy transition, we are the front line.

Recent data from the Top Energy (Te Puna Hihiko) 2025/2026 Annual and Sustainability Reports reveals a story of world-class technical success clashing with a broken national regulatory system. As we head towards the November 2026 election, the Carbon Neutral NZ Trust is "chiselling out" the truth: The Far North has built a zero-carbon fortress, but the "barnacles" of central government policy are keeping too many families in energy hardship.

The Technical Miracle at Ngāwhā

First, we must celebrate a massive victory. Geothermal energy has long been a double-edged sword; while renewable, it traditionally releases high levels of carbon dioxide.

Community-owned Top Energy has achieved a world-first adaptation of Israeli reinjection technology. By pumping the non-condensable gases back into the geothermal reservoir, they have slashed Scope 1 emissions by a staggering 85% since 2022 and 100% recently. This has turned Ngāwhā into a zero-emissions powerhouse, providing 125% of the Far North’s energy needs.

We aren't just sustainable: we are a net exporter of clean, baseload power to the rest of New Zealand.

But there is a pricing paradox: are we a resource colony?

Here is the uncomfortable truth: despite our energy abundance, Far North consumers and businesses pay the highest electricity prices in New Zealand.

While Top Energy’s generation business returned a healthy 17.6% profit, our industrial anchors—like Yuken in Kaitaia—are facing closure due to power costs. We have built the "orchard", but we are being charged "supermarket prices" plus a "delivery fee" for power that never leaves the region.

Why? Because current government rules and Electricity Authority regulations prevent our local utility from selling directly to us at a "cost-plus" rate. We are being treated as an "energy colony"—exporting our green wealth to Auckland while a lot of our people struggle.

The Challenges Ahead: Solar Equity

Our success has created new bottlenecks. The Far North has the highest solar uptake in the country (over 83MW total by roof-top houses as well as three large solar farms near Kaitaia), but our grid is hitting a "solar wall”: at peak times the north-south lines are insufficient to transport all the energy to the South.

Our Reminder for the 2026 Election

We need a "regional energy deal" that works. We are calling on all candidates for the November 4th election to commit to:

Energy Sovereignty: A regulatory carve-out that allows Top Energy to provide "Local Prices for Local Power".
Infrastructure Fairness: Mandating that commercial solar farms pay their fair share for using our lines. The Far North is no longer the "end of the line". We are the future. It’s time the rest of New Zealand started acting like it.
