Mike Casey from Rewiring Aotearoa has been on a bit of a publicity blitz of late with appearances on popular podcasts such as Radio NZ/Newsroom's "The Detail" and "When the Facts Change on The Spinoff. He has delivered a range of compelling data on the number of fossil fuelled machines in Aotearoa and what the potential benefits are for not just the Country but especially for consumers and businesses if we 'do the math' before we rush out and replace those machines with a newer fossil fuelled one. You are probably going to find that where there is a readily available electric alternative, it will be a much more cost effective option over its life.

To quote Rewiring Aotearoa's policy blueprint for Aotearoa:

Aotearoa NZ is at a critical moment in its energy transition.

Customers are facing rising electricity, gas, and petrol costs; supply challenges for natural gas; and increasing pressure to find sustainable alternatives as reliance on fossil fuels becomes less viable.

Electrification and a step change in customer participation through rooftop solar and batteries offer massive economic and environmental benefits:

  • $10.7 billion in annual household savings by 2040. $29 million a day.

  • 105 million tonnes of emissions avoided by 2040.

  • Greater energy independence by reducing the billions we spend on importing 3.1 million tonnes of fossil fuels each year.

  • The potential to offset millions of dollars of investment in electricity infrastructure.

We strongly recommend that you have a look at the Rewiring Aotearoa website and read their manifesto and data: https://www.rewiring.nz/manifesto
