At the Carbon Neutral NZ Trust, we believe the most powerful climate solutions often come from the next generation. We are thrilled to profile the incredible work of the Huanui College Carbon Neutral Ambassadors, a student-led team proving that youth leadership is essential for a sustainable future.
Led by prefect Aston Plunkett, the team brings together a powerful mix of academic prowess and practical action:
Aston (Physics/Chemistry): Provides the technical foundation for understanding energy systems and chemical processes in environmental solutions.
The Ambassador Team: A diverse group applying knowledge from biology to social sciences.
Mentorship: Guided by retired oceanographer Martin Knoche, linking their projects to the health of our global oceans.
Their Mission & Projects: The Ambassadors are moving beyond theory. Their current focus (apart from current projects on planting native trees, trapping, and junior environmental education along our path to earning Enviroschools) includes:
School Carbon Accounting: Implementing our Carbon Calculator to measure the school’s footprint and track reduction trends—a first for many NZ schools.
Investigating Global Connections: Discussing how distant events, like a synthetic fertiliser shortage (linked to oil & gas), create opportunities for local circular economies, such as recycling nutrients from wastewater.
Linking Land to Sea: Researching the critical connection between land-based wastewater discharge and threats like shellfish poisoning, advocating for cleaner water to protect both ecosystems and community health.
And where is the fun in this? The fun is in playing detective with the planet’s biggest puzzles. It’s connecting dots between a geopolitical crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and the future of our own veggie gardens. It’s the thrill of running a real-world experiment, whether it’s monitoring a classroom’s energy pulse or testing water quality. This is science with a purpose, where every data point tells a story about making our home healthier. It’s about proving that you don’t need a degree to make a difference—just curiosity, teamwork, and the guts to try.
Why This Matters: The Huanui Ambassadors are more than a school club; they are proto-professionals tackling interconnected global issues. They understand that cleaning wastewater with technologies like electrocoagulation (or "electro-clumping", as they might explain it) isn't just about pipes and ponds—it’s about food security, marine health, and building resilient communities.
They embody the trust’s goal: to equip young New Zealanders with the tools and knowledge to be architects of a carbon-neutral future.
We salute the Huanui College Carbon Neutral Ambassadors. Their vision, curiosity, and drive inspire us all. To any school interested in starting a similar programme, please get in touch—we’re here to help.
