This questionnaire enables you to estimate the amount of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and other greenhouse gas emissions that you are responsible for, as a household, over a 12 month period.

We ask a range of questions related to property size, trees planted on the property, composting, energy usage, transport, travel, waste disposal and diet. Your data is saved at the completion of each stage (represented by a screen) of the process and you can return and update it. Be aware that your net emissions will not be accurate until all your data has been entered.

You can then compare your figures with those of other households around the country and explore ways in which you can reduce your effect on the environment and ultimately track your progress from year to year

Terminology

You will see the term CO2-e used throughout this app. It stands for "carbon dioxide equivalent", and is a standard unit for measuring carbon footprints. Rather than identifying each greenhouse gas individually (CO2, N2O, CH4 etc), their effects are grouped together and expressed in terms of the amount of CO2 that would create the same amount of warming.

Features

You can leave the calculator at any time - whether you come back in 10 minutes or next month the data you have entered will still be visible and can be amended. After 3 months the information will be copied to a history file where it can be used as a basis to discover trends in the following years.

You will notice this symbol           throughout the calculator - run your mouse over it and relevant information will appear in a pop-up window.

When you complete a section click the 'Next' button to move to the next one.- this action will also save the current screen's data.

Household

How many people live in your household ?

Most studies worldwide use the household as their basic unit, but others to work out their statistics on a 'per-capita' basis.

By capturing the number of people in your household we can compare our results to those generated by either method.

What is your Postcode?

We want communities around NZ to be able to compare their progress towards a more sustainable future.

Your postcode will enable us to group you with others nearby to form a local community.
